Inspiring Today’s Youth for A Brighter Tomorrow
Sparking a child’s interest is like lighting a match; sometimes difficult but once lit it creates something great. On May 29th, PSEG employees including Michele Massaro and her husband Joseph Brennan went to Roosevelt Elementary school with books in tow to inspire the next generation of book worms. Michele and her husband regularly visit the same class throughout the year bringing reading materials and treats. The couple began volunteering three years ago after attending Bridgeport Public School’s Read Aloud day.
Bridgeport Public Schools kick off every school year with Read Aloud Day where volunteers come to read children’s books to Pre-K through sixth grade classes. Many volunteers continue their work in the schools as Read Aloud volunteers, tutors and mentors throughout the year. Volunteers receive a book a month from the School Volunteer association to read and donate to classroom libraries. In 2016, approximately 16,500 books were donated through the Read Aloud program.
